  • All this content across a range of platforms offers audiences the opportunity to choose when they listen to a radio
Podcasts:
  • Podcasts are now regularly produced by radio broadcasters, offering the chance to download a programme
  • Many offer additional content or edited highlights rom the official programme
  • Increasingly, podcasts are produced independently of a radio broadcaster, these include drama series, comedies and factual news

The Archers

LO: To explore the context and production of a radio drama.
  • The archers is the worlds longest running radio soap opera
  • Broadcast since 1951 it was famously billed as an everyday country folk and is now promoted as a contemporary drama in a rural setting
  • One of the original intentions of the programme was to communicate information about modern farming methods
  • Today it is very carefully researched and is informative about many issues to do with farming
  • Its drama but not as you know it
  • It is slow moving, subtle and gentle
  • Storylines are sometimes serious e.g. rape in marriage, racism, drug addiction, family breakups
  • More commonly, stories focus on daily rural life
Soap opera:
  • Open ended narrative, dramatic
  • Target audience is female and features strong female characters
  • Stories focused on family/work/relationships
  • Designed for regular listening
  • Ongoing stories to keep viewers hooked
  • Multi strand narratives to reflect real life
  • Set in specific locations
  • Tend t feature more dialogue than action
Listening options allow flexibility for a larger target audience as people can listen at different time as work may come up and people will not be able to listen. Also its good as people can listen to it whenever and wherever so it allows them to see it.

Set episode

LO: To explore a specific episode of the set text and the target audience.
  • Although one original function of the show was to educate farmers, it soon gained a large audience and a source of entertainment for a wider audience not just people from rural communities
  • However the show still prides itself on the quality of its research and it's ability to portray real rural life
Target audience:
  •  Roughly 6 million people who listen regularly
  • Target audience is generally aimed at adults as most of the characters are adults
The Archers is popular as when it was first created it was aimed at predominately women who were seen as stay at home people during this time while the men went to work. While the women were at home they could listen to the archers which could influence many people to listen to it which is why it blew up. Over many years they blew up by taking tie to do there research about different things about agriculture and things in rural areas which can intrigue people living in these sort of areas to listen as it includes information. Using uses and gratifications it has entertainment, social interaction, personal identity and information, this could be another reason why The Archers is so popular due to many interaction that can occur while only listening. It is also the longest running soap opera in the Uk which means it has history and can influence people to listen based off their history.  They are also only 1 minutes long which means they don't take up much of peoples day so its a positive when listening.

Challenge: The Archers could attract people both young and old as they may relate to the show like by being involved in agriculture and living in rural areas which may influence them to listen to the show as its relatable.
