LO: To explore the concept of representations and stereotypes.
Representation:
the media offers the audience an interpretation of the world.
It is RE PRESENTATION of the events, people and places.
It is positive because it shows that people who are disabled can still compete for their country and proving that people with disabilities can do the same and people who don't have disabilities.
Disabled, encouraging, superhuman, athletes.

Representations in magazines. 15/09/23
LO: To explore the representations in magazines.
Some of the differences between the two is one is stereotypically girly using the colours like pink, purple and the other is stereotypically manly using blue on grey. The one at aimed girls and the other is aimed at a boy. The GQ magazine is to do with spending your money where as the Carrie Underwood one is about saving your money. The girl is wearing a very girly, summer dress and the man is wearing a suit and tie like its seems to be a more serious type of magazine compared to the other which seems very chilled and relaxed.
Stereotypically women drink more cocktails than males and its considered a women's drink where as men stereotypically like beer or cider more. Stereotypically men wear watches more than women so they decided to put it out toward a magazine aimed at men.
- One has clothes on and the other has no clothes on
- One has bright clothing/colours and the other has very dark colours
- Stereotypically gay as he's wearing very girly clothes.
- The male is on a women cover aimed at women and the female is on a mens magazine aimed at men
- Sexually objectified as she is naked
- The female one aimed at men talks about men instead of female although there is a female on the front.
Exam Style Magazine Question 20/09/23
LO: To write and structure an effective exam style answer.
The two covers represent gender vey differently. Cosmopolitan represents Tom Daley as very feminine as he uses the colours like yellow and pink which stereotypically is seen as feminine Beside the colours his clothing choice is also seen as girly and not masculine. Cosmopolitan is a magazine mainly aimed at women but they have decided to use a man who is wearing feminine clothes. Tom also has some masculine featured by being physically fit and some tattoos.
On the other hand Rhianna has been sexually objectified as she is naked on a male magazine. It is aimed at men so they have made her naked for the male gaze. The male gaze is where a male is looking at a women who has been objectified just like Rhianna. She has also been shown to look like medusa with all of the snakes on her head [a women who in greek mythology and whoever she looks at turns into stone]. She has been made to look scary with snake eyes and snakes all over which stereotypically men are seen as more scary then females. The use of medusa shows it as a negative and saying that girls are scary a bit like medusa.
The representation of the gender being similar between the two is that they are both seen as the opposite gender so tom is seen as very feminine where as Rhianna seems a bit masculine. They both have tattoos although it is seen as more a masculine quality to have. In both of the magazines they have used the stereotypical colours of the opposing gender compared to the cover star.
The representation of the gender being different between the two are how the one with the cover star who is a male is talking a lot about the modern women who is independent and openly sexual where as the one with a female as the magazine star talks about men stereotypically like tech, man moments, new man. The one with Tom Daly is more vibrant and using more feminine colours stereotypically whereas the GQ one is stereotypically using masculine colours like blue and black.

LO: To explore the context and cover star for case study 1.
We can compare these two covers because the female is being sexually objectified by showing a lot of skin and being naked whereas the male is fully clothed and only showing the skin on his hands and face.
Gq targets its audience by using the male gaze strategy and sexually objectifying the women so men get attracted and look at it. GQ represents gender as the females are used for men to look at. The women is there for hoe she looks whereas the male is there to show off his achievement and what he's accomplished in life.

Typography:
The typography in my magazine uses the stereotypic colour pallet for males. It uses bold letters for the cover lines titles and uses a san serif font. They include a range of fonts including serif and others. They use serif to make it stand out to make people look and become interested. The title matches with some of the cover lines.
Colour pallet: Gold, white, blue and black. Gold connotes his success and his achievements.
My magazine predominantly is an L shape but still has a little bit in the top right.
My magazine anchorage is Tom holland suits up which which is referencing to his Spiderman career.
Tom Hollands medium close shot image is a mid shot showing his upper half of his body. Mis en sen is a suit which makes the shot seem serious or business like. Suit looks expensive and ring which connotes his status and wealth. The direct address connotes him as confident.
Do Now:
The colour pallet uses gold which connotes his achievements in life and his success. The sunglasses show some level of coolness and arrogant.
During the football match between Chelsea and Manchester City Raheem Sterling received racial abuse.
Sterling spoke out about this and got the fan removed from the stadium and banned. This was the start off abuse and many more people have been abused based on the minority. Now he has started a charity to stop the abuse and has a made a change to sport abuse but its still carrying on but changes are being made.
Racial Stereotypes 08/11/23
- He looks strong and males are stereotypically meant to be stronger
- All the GQ heroes are 3 men and 1 women which shows that they are showing men are more superior stereotypically
The female is being shown as a sex object.

Do Now
- Confident
- Physically masculine
- All men named on the cover are represented as successful in their own field
- The choice to represent sterling topless with his tattoos on show reinforces the stereotype of men as having to be hyper masculine
- The black wings represent him as a supernatural figure suggesting his extraordinary skills on the pitch.
- His thick silver jewellery shows his success and wealth
- Using a hugely successful black cover star as their dominant image is presenting a role model for its readers and for someone to aspire to be like them.
- Divers range of ethnicity on the cover is unusual for GQ and lifestyle magazines in generalx
- Focuses on BLM which is different for a lifestyle magazine
- A black main cover star is unusual for a GQ cover
- His hood up connotes criminal activity but because it is white they are trying to say that white is seen as a nicer colour so just because he has his hood up doesn't mean he's doing criminal activity.

Vogue was made in 1892 and is published by conde nast and is mainly aimed at young females ranging from 17 to 29 year olds.
Malala Yousafzai
LO: To explore the context and cover star for case study 2.
Vogue is aimed at ABC1 fashion and style conscious women who are educated, sophisticated and wealthy. Whilst it traditionally targets an older female audience 30-45 year olds, you could say that this audience has now broadened to appeal to, inspire and empower younger readers too, as well as much more culturally diverse audience, under the influence of the new editor. Vogue is a mainstream magazine, so it uses the typical codes and conventions of print to construct the front cover. Over a long period of time, Vogue has also acquired its own unique house style so that its brand identity is instantly recognisable.
Vogue is trying to show a much more progressive attitude attitude towards male being able to wear female clothing by including the quote anytime your putting barriers up in your life, your limiting yourself.
- She was shot in the head by the Taliban and survived
- This happened because she went to school
- Malala is an international symbol standing up for girls education in Pakistan
- Malala has now graduated from oxford university and has married a manager for a Pakistan cricket board
- Malala was shot at just 15 years old
- Malala won the Nobel peace prize

Malala Yousafzai
LO: To explore the context and cover star for case study 2.
Malala was just 15 when she was shot in the head for going to school. She was in a 5 hour long surgery before being released many day later. She was affected by this very much and decided to start her own fund [Malala fund]. She started to campaign and many people joined her after hearing about the event. Girls are still not allowed to go to school but she is trying to create a change and difference. Malala has lost her hearing in he left ear after many failed assassination attempts. Malalas friends also got shot during this time and survived just like Malala. I think they included Malala in a vogue magazine cover because she is a women in power and has many achievements so can be seen as an inspiration to many children living in Afghanistan or around the world.
- Her clothes match the background both being red, bring passion with it and implies that she wants to overcome the Taliban and win women's rights
- Talks about the extraordinary life of Malala showing how she has achieved over her life and how much she has overcome.
- The gold jewellery implies her wealth and achievements over her life
- The words survivor, activist, legend all show how important she is to many people and is an inspiration to her country
- The word survivor shows that she has been through a lot and has been able to overcome the tough times and so she is being recognised for it and being praised
- The cover line fighting talk and interviewing Anthony Joshua is very unexpected for a women's magazine
- Her religion links to the Mise en scene of her wearing a hijab

Do Now:
- Her head scarf shows her religion of muslim
- The word survivor shows that she has been through a lot throughout her life and legend next to it shows how much of a role model she is too people in her country and around the world
- The color red shows passion and implies that she wants to overcome the Taliban and win the rights for women's education
Her being a cover star implies that she is a powerful and important to many. It also has 2 other people of color on the front page which is rare for a vogue cover.
I feel that females are being shown as superior to men. Very stereotypical in some ways like beuty love romance. Women have been represented as strong.
The vogue cover represents females because it is showing females on the front cover.

Malala Yousafzai
LO: To practice comparing representations in two covers.
- Both have feminine qualities like jewellery and makeup
- The shot type for Kim is a medium long shot and shows a lot of skin whereas Malala is a medium close up only showing the skin on her face
- Kim is being sexually objectified whereas Malala is not
- Kim is more about fashion and what she looks like compared to Malala which is what she has achieved and it about her
The two magazine covers are significantly different as ELLE's magazine is about fashion and looks where as VOGUE's magazine is about Malala achievements and her life.
Although there is a similarity which is how they both have feminine like qualities in both having makeup and jewellery on [Mise en scene]. This can be seen if you look for the further details and you can see that Malala has a ring on her finger and makeup on and Kim also has makeup and jewellery on. In both of the magazines they use a particular shot type too see there appearance and jewellery. Another similarity is within the cover lines where it says in big bold writing confidence which Kim clearly shows by her look and the way she is stood. On the other hand Malala also looks confident and proud in the way she is sat like she is important.
Linking back to my introduction the magazine with Kim on it is all about fashion and bow she looks where as the cover with Malala on the front is all about her achievements. This is seen where Kim is being sexually objectified which a lot of makeup and not much clothing on. Malala is shown as a legend using cover lines like survivor, activist, legend. These 3 words show that she is very important to many people and is showing her achievements to win the rights for girls education. She is shown as an inspiration where Kim is shown as a fashion mode. 1 difference is in the cover lines where it talks abut fighting on the vogue magazine. This relates to Malala as she is fighting against the Taliban for women's rights to education so even though it is not abut her it still relates in some way. Whereas is the ELLE magazine it talks about stuff completely different to the main cover star.
Another difference is the shot type. Kims shot type is a medium long shot showing herself off and is very confident whereas the cover with Malala is a medium close up where she seems quite shy by the way her hands are placed and her facial expressions. Kim is very open and not wearing very much so she is stereotypically being sexually objectified and Malala is very covered up and not showing any skin apart from her hands and face.
A final difference is the colour palette. the vogue colour palette means something and shows a form of passion which links to Malala and how she wants to win the rights or girls education but Kims magazine just stereotypically gives off a girly vibe with the use of the colour pink. Malala has clothes which links to the colour palette and gives off a feeling of passion and love whereas Kim is wearing clothes which are fashionable and she is only trying to look good.
Overall the gender representations are very different although it can be seen that there is some similarities between the feminine qualities but there is more differences overall.
